SZ Blockprints x Dana Small Limited Collaboration
We’re excited to share a joyful new collaboration from interior designer Dana Small and SZ Blockprints, on a collection of bedding and apparel. The limited-edition assortment combines signature SZ patterns with Dana’s hand-drawn prints, celebrating their shared love of Indian hand-blocked textiles through bright, cheerful designs.
Dana, tell us about the inspiration for the palette and design of the collaboration?
I am always drawn to the colors of nature from crisp greens of the tropics, to bright blue skies and the sweetest pinks you find on seashells. And I love mixing in a series of neutral colors that mimic the color of sand. As for the patterns, it was our intent to marry the traditional flowers of India block printing and mix in some SZ flare and then a pop of pattern from me.
What about hand block print is alluring to you?
I am an illustrator and painter at heart so anything hand-drawn or hand-made is so appreciated by me. I have been a fan of handblock since I can remember.
When I was little (like 6 years old) I attended art workshops in the summer time and one summer they focused on hand-block printing on paper. We got to carve out our own design - I have no idea where that block is now. Then just out of college, traveling abroad I stumbled upon some hand-block fabrics while shopping in Europe and instantly fell in love with the richness, texture and colors of hand block on cotton.
Describe your personal style in three words?
ECLECTIC because of my love of layered patterns, bright colors, and mixed influences from around the globe. POLISHED - reflects my preference for crisp, tailored pieces that bring structure and sophistication to a space or outfit. ORGANIC-a nod to my connection with nature and natural textures. I love adding wicker, rattan, bamboo, caning or wood carving elements to my interiors.
Do you have a favourite colour and if so, what is it and why?
The most popular color in the world is blue and I am 100% in agreeance to that popularity. I think people in general can relate to the color blue because it can act as a neutral. Blue goes with all colors. “Matilda’s Blue” in particular is a shade of blue that I created specifically for my logo and store front. Its a mix of sky blue and periwinkle...…but I really do love all colors, especially greens and soft pinks.
What piece from the collaboration are you most excited about?
I am excited for all the pieces. Just seeing them go from conception to reality is such a dream. I am loving the tradition of the Indian poppy flower layered with a very subtle, simple stripe that will be on quilts and shams. The reverse is a wavy weave, so unexpected and a perfect pattern when you want to play down the florals. In addition, I am loving the pillowcase sets. We took the stripe pattern from my logo and recreated it as a pattern for block printing. When it is printed in all these fun colors, I think it brings such style to the act of bed making.
Can you give us a few styling tips for how to incorporate the collaboration pieces into your home?
Customers and clients alike, constantly ask me how to style their bed. I always reply the same way. Don’t overthink it. Start with white sheets and a white duvet. Then piece by piece add some layers of color. A pop of color at the foot of the bed with a folded hand-stitched quilt for colder nights (or your dog) and a matching set of euro pillows at the headboard is an ideal pairing. Then layer in a few more colors/designs with the addition of patterned pillow cases and accent pillows.
