I am an architect and designer based in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. During quarantine, I've been keeping busy settling into our new house, where I recently completed a major gut renovation/design overhaul. My next project is our yard, in which we discovered some wild asparagus coming up amidst our blackberry brambles, and have been planting vegetables, herbs + medicinal flowers in our new raised beds that my husband built.
We take lots of walks with our dog and one and a half-year-old son, who likes collecting pine cones and dandelions, and looking for and listening to the birds; we log our bird sightings in his beginning bird watching book.
Indoors, lots of cooking of course! I've been pickling radishes from our CSA, making almond flour, tahini + peanut butter cookies (favorite recipe from SZ friend Jenna of Linne Botanicals), and cooking stocks + beans in my pressure cooker. Spring comes late in Maine!)
I've been fascinated by the new NY Times podcast 'Rabbit Hole', about the depths of the internet and specifically YouTube, and as always, reading The New Yorker. I also love the 'Brain Pickings' newsletter by Maria Popova and have found some quiet, reflective moments with favorite poets and essayists Terry Tempest Williams, Billy Collins and Mary Oliver.
I've tried to tune into Sight Unseen's weekly design talks on IG Live, and have been delving back into our record collection, now that it's unpacked - recent favorites including Nina Simone's Baltimore, Bonnie Raitt's Streetlights and Oumou Sangare's Moussolou.
